How to Create a Fairy Garden

Every spring I enjoy creating a fairy garden, which is pretty much a small outdoor world in a pot that is the perfect size for fairies. This is a fun project anyone can create and it looks beautiful outdoors on a patio or a porch. Here is a step by step tutorial on how to make a fairy garden of your own.

1. First choose the right flower pot for the job. It should be one that is bigger and wider on top so you have plenty of room for plants and decor.

2. Decide on a theme. I would highly recommend having a theme in mind first before you choose your plants and decor. There are a variety of different themes you can choose for your garden. In the past I have done tea party, beach, castle, gnomes and unicorns. My current fairy garden is camp ground themed. You can also create one based on a favorite movie or book series. I once had a Pocahontas themed fairy garden which was really cool!

3. Pick your plants. Once you have your theme it’s time to go plant shopping. There are a variety of different plants you can get for your fairy garden. But I recommend smaller ones so they will fit better in your pot. If your plants are too big you won’t have much room for your decor and they will get overgrown and completely fill up your pot. So when it comes to plants less is more. Any small colored flowers would be great as well as mini shrubs, ferns, grasses or moss. Succulents would also be great for a beach or tropical theme. I also got a mini tree for my Pocahontas garden. Some garden centers even have plants specifically made for fairy gardens.

4. Gather Up Your Decor. There is a variety of decor that can be used for a fairy garden. Nature items such as stones, seashells, sticks and pine ones work great as well as plastic figurines, miniature tables and chairs or mini birdhouses. For my campground fairy garden pictured above I used glass beads and blue gravel to create the pond and put stones around it, I also used stones to create the pathway and for around the campfire. For the fire part I used orange craft jewels. I made the tent by simply folding a piece of green craft foam in half and tying a piece of string around it. I also have a stick poked in the middle to keep it in place because of its light weight. Then I just used a bunch of figurines I had to finish up my mini fairy camp. You can get any figurines or decor for your fairy garden at any craft store. Some even have specific aisles for fairy garden materials. Just make sure everything is waterproof so it doesn’t get ruined if it rains!

5. Put it All Together. Once you have all your plants and materials ready it’s time to create your fairy garden! First fill your pot up with soil. Then put in your plants. I usually put mine in the back to make more room for decor. You can also put any extra soil around your plants after you plant them as needed. Next comes the fun part! Decorate your garden with your figurines and decor anyway you want. There is no right or wrong way to do it.

6. Display your fairy garden. Once you finish your garden, put it out on a porch, deck or patio to enjoy in the coming months!

Happy Summer!

Creatively yours,

Christmas Version of Galaxy Painting

Here is a Christmas themed version of galaxy painting (see earlier posts)  that I did over the weekend. First I cut a piece of white paper into thick strips. Then I wrote my friends’ names on each strip in either green or red paint. The trick to this step is to take your time and form the letters slowly or else you won’t be able to read them. Next I took the opposite paint color and painted dots in the letters to make them look like wreaths. Again this step should not be done too quickly. I then took a Q tip, dipped it in various shades of light blue paint and dabbed it around the letters to create snowflakes. After I finished painting I let it all dry overnight. The next day I took some red construction paper and cut into strips slightly bigger than the letter paintings. Then I grabbed a glue stick and glued each painting to a red strip. Lastly for a little extra decoration I glued some pre cut squares of gift wrapping above the letters without covering ...

A Fun Way to Recycle Your Old Desk Calendar From Last Year

It’s fun to have a tear off desk calendar throughout the year because it gives you a different quote, trivia fact or Bible verse to look at everyday as well as a picture of some sort. But what are you supposed to do with the pages you have torn off already? They often just pile up on your desk or end up in a mess on the floor. Well today I am going to show you a fun way to recycle your old tear off calendar pages and create a beautiful collage with them. And the best part? You don’t have to be a great artist to do this project. It’s super easy and doesn’t require any professional art experience, just creativity and your old tear off calendar pages. So let’s get to it! What you will need: Old tear off calendar pages A piece of cardboard or thick paper Rubber cement or a glue stick Scissors Contact paper Stickers (optional) Hole punch (optional) Yarn for hanging (optional) Step 1: Cut your cardboard or paper to the size you want your collage to be. I actually us...

Galaxy Painting

For my first tutorial I am going to teach you how to do Galaxy Painting, my own style of painting that I invented this weekend! Materials you will need: Plain white paper White crayon Water color paint Tempera Paint Q tips A small cup of water Thick construction paper Glue stick Scissors Step 1: Cut your white paper anyway you want or leave as is Step 2: Draw on your white paper with your white crayon. This step may be a little difficult because you won’t really be able to see what you are drawing. I would recommend keeping it super simple by just drawing stars, the moon or anything you might see in outer space. You can also write your name as well. Stencils might also make this step easier if you have them on hand. Step 3: Grab your water color paint and paint the entire piece of white paper. You will magically be able to see your white crayon drawings. Use as many colors as you want to create a tie dye design. You can also add glitter while the paint is still wet but this is co...
