How to Organize Your Craft Supplies

Do you have a lot of art supplies taking over your work space? Is it getting hard to find things when you need them? Maybe you got a lot of new supplies and your old organization method isn’t working anymore. Well never fear, Colleen is here! Today I’m going to share with you my best tips and secrets for not only organizing your art supplies but also making them look aesthetically pleasing. With these tips you will learn how to turn your big mess into a creative success and start off the new year right! So without further to do, let’s get started!

1. Use recycled boxes and containers for storage

Instead of going out and buying containers for storage of your supplies, re use old food containers and jars. I use coffee containers for storage of smaller materials such as sequins, jewels and beads. I also store pom pom balls in a big trail mix jar, sea shells and stones in cool whip containers and the old Parmesan cheese container is for old board game pieces. I also used cardboard boxes for storage of bigger materials such as fabrics, felt, clay and my fairy garden figurines. So the next time you finish off a container of food or have an empty box laying around think about what kind of art materials can be stored in it. Just make sure you clean out any container before using it. The only food container I would recommend avoiding is old soup cans because they can be quite sharp!  You can also decorate containers and boxes if desired.

2. Have a specific shelf or table space for type of material

I like storing art supplies that are similar in the same place. For example I store paper and canvases for painting on one shelf and all my paints, glue, scissors, pencils etc. on the shelf directly above. I also store my smaller containers on the same shelf and as well as storing my boxed craft kits together. This makes it easy to find supplies and materials  when I need them.

3. Labels, labels…and oh yeah more labels!

After you store your materials in boxes and containers it’s a good idea to label them so you always know what’s inside them and to make clean up a lot easier. You can buy sticker labels to write on at any office supply store. Or you can make homemade labels by cutting strips of white paper, writing on them and taping them on your containers. It might also be fun to make labels with fun colors and fonts on the computer. Just print them out, cut them apart and tape them to your boxes and containers. You can even write directly on cardboard boxes to keep it simple. If you don’t want to make labels for smaller containers and boxes I would recommend keeping the lids off or using see through containers so you can see what’s inside them. You can also label shelves if desired.

4. Use old cups and mugs for storing paint brushes and utensils

Cups and mugs make great storage for paintbrushes and other art utensils such as pencils, markers and scissors. That way these things won’t be left floating around your art space.

5. Even laundry baskets make storage

I use my old laundry basket to store craft materials I keep in zip lock bags. This includes stickers, tissue paper, doilies, yarn, old wrapping paper and fake flowers.

 6. Keep an open table space for doing art projects

It’s always good to have a clear, open space, away from your stored away materials, for doing art. This will not only give you more space to create but will also make cleaning up easier by stopping you from leaving materials out.

I hope these tips will help you to better organize your creative space and keep everything in its proper place.

Creatively yours,
Colleen✨

Christmas Version of Galaxy Painting

Here is a Christmas themed version of galaxy painting (see earlier posts)  that I did over the weekend. First I cut a piece of white paper into thick strips. Then I wrote my friends’ names on each strip in either green or red paint. The trick to this step is to take your time and form the letters slowly or else you won’t be able to read them. Next I took the opposite paint color and painted dots in the letters to make them look like wreaths. Again this step should not be done too quickly. I then took a Q tip, dipped it in various shades of light blue paint and dabbed it around the letters to create snowflakes. After I finished painting I let it all dry overnight. The next day I took some red construction paper and cut into strips slightly bigger than the letter paintings. Then I grabbed a glue stick and glued each painting to a red strip. Lastly for a little extra decoration I glued some pre cut squares of gift wrapping above the letters without covering ...

A Fun Way to Recycle Your Old Desk Calendar From Last Year

It’s fun to have a tear off desk calendar throughout the year because it gives you a different quote, trivia fact or Bible verse to look at everyday as well as a picture of some sort. But what are you supposed to do with the pages you have torn off already? They often just pile up on your desk or end up in a mess on the floor. Well today I am going to show you a fun way to recycle your old tear off calendar pages and create a beautiful collage with them. And the best part? You don’t have to be a great artist to do this project. It’s super easy and doesn’t require any professional art experience, just creativity and your old tear off calendar pages. So let’s get to it! What you will need: Old tear off calendar pages A piece of cardboard or thick paper Rubber cement or a glue stick Scissors Contact paper Stickers (optional) Hole punch (optional) Yarn for hanging (optional) Step 1: Cut your cardboard or paper to the size you want your collage to be. Galaxy Painting

For my first tutorial I am going to teach you how to do Galaxy Painting, my own style of painting that I invented this weekend! Materials you will need: Plain white paper White crayon Water color paint Tempera Paint Q tips A small cup of water Thick construction paper Glue stick Scissors Step 1: Cut your white paper anyway you want or leave as is Step 2: Draw on your white paper with your white crayon. This step may be a little difficult because you won’t really be able to see what you are drawing. I would recommend keeping it super simple by just drawing stars, the moon or anything you might see in outer space. You can also write your name as well. Stencils might also make this step easier if you have them on hand. Step 3: Grab your water color paint and paint the entire piece of white paper. You will magically be able to see your white crayon drawings. Use as many colors as you want to create a tie dye design. You can also add glitter while the paint is still wet but this is co...
